2015 Promotion Announcement: A big day is upon us here at Community IT! We are pleased to announce that Johan Hammerstrom has been promoted to President (now CEO) and will be running the daily operations of the company.
Johan’s 14 years of experience at Community IT gives him unparalleled insight into our strategy and operations. Johan has been assisting businesses and non-profit organizations with technology planning, project management and direct network support since he began working at Community IT Innovators.
In Johan’s own words, “I have always been interested in using technology as a force for good that can improve our world. In college, I pursued this interest through science, first studying Chemistry, Physics and Biology at Stanford University. I went on to study Biophysics at Johns Hopkins University and received a Masters Degree.”
“The time I spent in Baltimore convinced me that there were more pressing and immediate problems that technology could and should be used to address. I left academic science and pursued a career in Information Technology, with the express goal of improving our communities and our world. I started at Community IT in 1999 as a Network Administrator. Since that time, I have been a Network Engineer, a Team Lead, the Director of Services, Vice President of Services, Chief Operating Officer and now President.”
“Working directly with over 200 nonprofit organizations, to help them plan around and use technology to accomplish their mission has been one of the most positive and rewarding experiences of my life.”
It is no understatement to say that Johan understands our services and clients from all perspectives. His thought leadership in nonprofit technology has been an important part of our success, as has his direct work with many of our clients. Please join us in congratulating him on this well deserved promotion!
This is an important step not only for the continued success of Community IT, but to our clients as well. Johan’s insight and leadership around operations helped us to successfully transition to and build upon the Managed IT Services Provider model that underpins our approach to the support and guidance we provide to over 125 nonprofits in the DC and Baltimore metro areas. He has also overseen our operations when we have consistently won the 501MSP award. The new role gives him increased responsibility and authority to shape the strategic direction of this practice and the company. The talented group of directors, managers, and consultants that he has had a significant role in developing are ready to support this transition by stepping up into roles of increased responsibility themselves.

Our Help Desk team ended 2015 on a very high note by receiving the Help Desk Institute team certification award. HDI is an international professional association and certification body for the technical service and support industry. For support teams possessing four or more members, at least 80 percent of team members must hold an HDI certification to qualify for the team award. We are so proud to congratulate our Help Desk team on this achievement, and we are committed to continuing to provide outstanding customer service and maintaining our level of certifications.
Here at Community IT we are very proud of our own COO, Johan Hammerstrom, who recently received an Executive Management Award from SmartCEO for his work here at Community IT. We’ve always known that Johan strives to uphold the highest ethics, lead collaboratively and creatively, and enhance and support our mission. This award comes as no surprise to the team here, and further highlights the dedication to client support and mission fulfillment that Johan brings to his work and to our team every day.
Johan had the opportunity to speak with SmartCEO about his approach, and the partner relationship Community IT builds with each of our clients. What we love about the resulting video is how it speaks to both our mission and values. The collaborative and caring personality of Community IT is reflected in his comments, as is the alignment of our our mission with those of our clients.
Johan’s dedication to Community IT has helped to make us who we are and who we will become. As he says, we do speak the language of nonprofits. We understand the unique experiences and challenges faced by nonprofit organizations of all sizes, and we’re here to help. Technology can be expensive and confusing and challenging to manage, so we aim to make it simpler by providing everything from strategic planning to daily support and maintenance. Our greatest achievements come from helping to ensure that missions are fulfilled and that organizations have the technology they need to achieve those missions.
We couldn’t do what we do without Johan, and we applaud him for this well-deserved recognition.
